What Revelations Actually Did

Copernicus, Darwin, Hubble, six thousand confirmed exoplanets. We have run this experiment repeatedly, and the result is absorption.

The Test Has Already Been Run

Every serious conversation about Disclosure arrives eventually at the same sentence, delivered with a certain hush: but it would change everything.

It is offered as an intuition too obvious to need support. It is not an intuition. It is an empirical claim about how human societies absorb confirmed information regarding their place in the universe, and we have run that experiment several times.

The results are dull. Every time, the outcome is absorption: a period of newspaper coverage, a much smaller period of genuine intellectual unease among a literate minority, and then the slow settling of a new fact into the furniture. Sometimes absorption takes a century and a half and still is not finished. Sometimes it takes about two weeks. What it never does is shatter anything.

Copernicus, or: You Cannot Be Demoted From the Basement

The Copernican story is the load-bearing analogy for the whole position. Humanity sat at the center of creation; Copernicus moved us; we have been reeling ever since. Freud gave that story its most quotable form, in the Eighteenth Lecture published in English in 1920:

Humanity, in the course of time, has had to endure from the hands of science two great outrages against its naive self-love. The first was when humanity discovered that our earth was not the center of the universe, but only a tiny speck in a world-system hardly conceivable in its magnitude.

The Copernicus–Darwin–Freud triad descends from that paragraph. Freud did not invent the story and did not claim to; he notes in the same lecture that "we psychoanalysts were neither the first, nor the only ones to announce this admonition to look within ourselves." Dennis Danielson's "The great Copernican cliché" (American Journal of Physics 69, 2001) opens by observing that the dethronement claim had by then been repeated for more than three centuries by scientists, historians, and popularizers alike.

Danielson's argument — restated by Danielson himself as Myth 6 in Ronald Numbers' Galileo Goes to Jail (Harvard, 2009), independently endorsed by Michael Keas in the sequel volume, Newton's Apple and Other Myths about Science (Harvard, 2015), and developed at book length with the historian of astronomy Christopher Graney in A Universe of Earths — is that the narrative runs backwards. Pre-Copernican cosmology did not treat the center as a throne. It treated the center as the sump: the lowest, heaviest, most corrupt address in creation, farthest from the heavens. CONTESTED — this is the prevailing view among specialists, not a unanimous one, and Danielson is Professor Emeritus of English rather than a historian of astronomy.

The evidence is not a reconstruction. It is a man writing thirty-seven years after De revolutionibus, in full knowledge of it. Montaigne, in the "Apology for Raimond Sebond," published 1580:

Presumption is our natural and original disease. The most wretched and frail of all creatures is man, and withal the proudest. He feels and sees himself lodged here in the dirt and filth of the world, nailed and rivetted to the worst and deadest part of the universe, in the lowest story of the house, the most remote from the heavenly arch, with animals of the worst condition of the three; and yet in his imagination will be placing himself above the circle of the moon, and bringing the heavens under his feet.

Montaigne never says center. He does not need to. In the cosmos he is working in, the lowest story is the center. And he is working in it knowingly: elsewhere in the same chapter he names Copernicus, grants that he "has in our times so grounded this doctrine that it very regularly serves to all astrological consequences," and concludes that we "ought not much to care which is the true opinion." That is a man handed the reorganization of the heavens, filing it under interesting.

The anti-demotion case can be oversold. Genuine vertigo does exist in the record. Donne, 1611:

And new Philosophy calls all in doubt, / The Element of fire is quite put out; / The Sun is lost, and th'earth, and no mans wit / Can well direct him where to looke for it. […] 'Tis all in peeces, all cohaerence gone;

That is real distress, contemporaneous, not manufactured by later historians. What Donne was distressed by is CONTESTED — Copernicanism, Galileo's telescope, the new stars, or simply the age; the second line names an Aristotelian casualty, not a Copernican one. That the unease stayed inside a small literate elite and left everyone else untouched is my reading of the record, not a finding in it. It is also the reading that best fits everything that follows.

The other half of the myth is that religion crushed the science. The Church's action was scripturally framed: the 1616 consultants called heliocentrism false and contrary to Scripture, and the 1633 trial of Galileo followed that frame. But the arguments that actually gave working astronomers pause were not scriptural at all. Christopher Graney's analysis of Riccioli's 1651 Almagestum Novum — a Jesuit's catalogue of 126 arguments about the Earth's motion, 49 for Copernicanism and 77 against — finds that "religious arguments play a minor role in the debate; careful, reproducible experiments a major role." The objections Riccioli found decisive rested "on telescopic observations of stars, and on the apparent absence of what today would be called 'Coriolis Effect' phenomena." The star-size problem was nasty and sincere: measured stellar disks, which we now know to be diffraction artifacts, implied that under Copernicanism every star would have to dwarf the Sun. Good-faith empiricism, confidently wrong.

And the suppression leaked. Owen Gingerich established that De revolutionibus was never simply banned. The 1616 decree suspended it donec corrigatur — until corrected — and the corrections finally issued in 1620 amounted, in Gingerich's count, to about a dozen passages whose whole logic was to convert assertions into hypotheses. One instruction, in his rendering: "If certain of Copernicus' passages on the motion of the earth are not hypothetical, make them hypothetical; then they will not be against either the truth or the Holy Writ."

Then Gingerich went and counted the books. DOCUMENTED Of about 400 copies now in Europe, 33 were censored — roughly one in twelve. About 60% of the Italian copies. Comparatively few in France, where many sat in Jesuit libraries. In Spain and Portugal, none at all.

His conclusion: "More than anything else, the suspension and correction of De revolutionibus probably merely gave Copernicus' ideas abundant free publicity."

Eleven copies in twelve of the most dangerous book in Europe were never corrected at all. It stayed on the Index until 1835.

Darwin, or: Absorption Is a Stain, Not a Wave

If Copernicus is the case where the crisis was retrofitted, Darwin is the case where the absorption simply never finished.

The science stalled first. From roughly the 1880s through the 1920s, natural selection went into scientific eclipse: common descent was broadly accepted by biologists, and the mechanism was not. A demonstrated mechanism does not propagate at the speed of publication, even among professionals with every reason to want it.

Then the public, where the numbers are blunt. Gallup, May 2024: 37% of Americans hold a young-earth creationist position; 24% accept unguided evolution.

One hundred sixty-five years after the Origin of Species. Not sixteen. A hundred and sixty-five, with the whole twentieth century's genetics, radiometric dating, and fossil record arriving in the interval, and better than a third of the population of the world's dominant scientific power still puts humanity's creation inside the last ten thousand years.

That is what absorption looks like from the inside. Not a wave breaking over a civilization. A stain spreading through fabric, which after a very long time has still not reached the corners, and which nobody experiences as an event.

Anyone promising that Disclosure would rewrite human self-understanding is making a prediction Darwin already falsified.

The Ones Nobody Noticed

The Copernican and Darwinian cases are at least contested. What follows is a list of confirmed, enormous, correct discoveries that landed with no measurable cultural impact whatsoever.

The universe turns out to be unimaginably larger than anyone thought. Hubble's demonstration that the spiral nebulae are separate galaxies — that the Milky Way is not the universe but a fleck in it — ran in the New York Times on 23 November 1924. The astronomer Virginia Trimble's summary of the reception: it did so "without attracting much attention." The largest single expansion of the known cosmos in human history, and the phrase history supplies is without attracting much attention.

Six thousand three hundred fifty-four other worlds. That is the confirmed exoplanet count. The number is public and it goes up. There is no crisis attached to it, and no belief anywhere has been revised on account of it.

Most of Earth's cells live underground. The deep biosphere: a vast microbial ecosystem in the crust, holding the majority of the planet's cells. A second biosphere, on our own planet, and no one can tell you when they learned of it.

LGM-1. A signal so regular that for a while it carried the label Little Green Men 1. It was a pulsar. That is the closest the scientific record has come to working astronomers being briefly unable to rule out another civilization, and it produced no crisis on the way in or the way out.

The presidential moment. Possible fossil life from Mars was announced, and the President of the United States stood up and said so. This is as close as the actual world has come to a staged, top-down, official announcement of life beyond Earth — the precise scenario Disclosure discourse spends its energy anticipating. It changed nothing. There is no before-and-after in any measure anyone has produced, and most people reading this had forgotten it happened.

The Document That Predicted the Shrug

The most misused artifact in the entire subject is the 1960 Brookings Institution report to NASA, cited throughout UFO folklore as the government's own admission that Disclosure would collapse society. It is quoted, invariably, for one paragraph about societies disintegrating on contact with a superior civilization.

Read whole, it says something duller. Its footnotes benchmark the likely public impact of discovering alien life against the discovery of the coelacanth or the panda. Its main text guesses that the existence of other beings "might become simply one of the facts of life."

Sixty-six years of conspiracy theory have been built on the other paragraph. The government's own commissioned study predicted the nothingburger, in writing, and compared it to a fish.

The Panic That Mostly Did Not Happen

The founding evidence that news from the sky causes mass hysteria is the 1938 War of the Worlds broadcast, and it does not hold. DEBUNKED

The C.E. Hooper ratings service telephoned 5,000 households on the night of the broadcast, asking what program they were listening to. Two percent named the Welles program; 98% were listening to something else, or to nothing. That is a snapshot of a moment rather than a count of everyone who heard any part of the hour, and two percent of the 1938 audience still runs to something like a million people. It is not nobody. It is nothing like a nation.

Hadley Cantril's The Invasion from Mars (Princeton, 1940) is where the panic figures come from, and Cantril conceded that the audience survey underneath them ran "over 100 per cent higher than any other known measure of this audience." Jefferson Pooley and Michael Socolow, reviewing the making of the book, judge that Cantril "insisted on a dramatic prose style and chapter structure and exaggerated the extent of the panic," and note that its original marketing pitched it as a "mystery-adventure story of the American people."

So the canonical proof that cosmic news breaks people is a study of a panic that mostly did not happen, dramatized by its own author and sold as an adventure story.

Why the Slot Is Already Full

There is a fallback available. It goes: yes, but we are more disenchanted now. Weber's rationalized, godless modernity has left a vacuum, and confirmed contact would rush in to fill it.

The trouble is that disenchantment is shaky as a description of actual people. Gallup found in 2005 that 73% of Americans hold at least one paranormal belief. The re-enchantment slot is not vacant and awaiting a saucer. It is occupied, at capacity, and has been the whole time.

Which is also why the religious-crisis prediction fails so consistently. Ted Peters' ETI Religious Crisis Survey — 1,325 respondents, and a self-selected snowball sample rather than a probability sample, which has to be said every time it is cited — found that 69% of self-identified non-religious respondents projected a crisis for religion following confirmed contact, against a 34% average among the religiously affiliated. Peters' own stated finding: "the hypothesis that the major religious traditions of our world will confront a crisis let alone a collapse is not confirmed."

Be careful what that measures. Both numbers are forecasts, and the second one comes from the party with the strongest possible incentive to forecast its own resilience. The principle this site runs on — people are poor witnesses to their own unexperienced futures — applies to the faithful exactly as it applies to everybody else. So the survey does not establish that religion would hold.

What it establishes is narrower and stranger. The people most confident that religion would shatter are, disproportionately, the people standing outside it. Ontological shock is something we predict for others.

What This Does Not Show

Three objections, and I am not going to pretend they have been answered.

None of these revelations had intentions. Copernicus, Hubble, the exoplanet count, the deep biosphere — every one is a fact about the furniture of the universe. Heliocentrism does not have a foreign policy. Confirmation that something under intelligent control operates in restricted airspace would be a fact about an agent, and nothing in this file licenses the leap from one category to the other.

The Brookings paragraph everybody quotes is about contact between human societies of unequal power. That is the one precedent set that does contain other agents, and it is not a record of shrugging. I have no rebuttal here. What I can say is only this: the thesis on this page is about beliefs. Whether people revise their picture of the world is a separate question from whether anyone is harmed, and the historical answer to the second question has often been terrible. Absorption is not a synonym for safety.

The list is curated. Confirmed information has reorganized societies very fast before — when it arrived attached to a weapon, a disease, or a policy that made people move. What the cases here share is that the news was cosmological and the consequences were optional. That is a real limit on how far the pattern travels, and it is worth saying before someone else says it.

There is a fourth, which cuts the other way and is worth admitting anyway. Measuring Darwin's absorption with polling about theology measures the layer where least changed. At the institutional layer — what got taught, funded, and built on — the absorption was fairly quick and fairly total. Elites absorb faster than publics. If Disclosure's consequences are institutional rather than devotional, the Gallup numbers are the wrong instrument.

The Verdict

Set them side by side.

  • Heliocentrism, 1543. Suspended donec corrigatur; eleven copies in twelve never corrected; Montaigne, in 1580, thought it did not much matter which opinion was true.
  • "New Philosophy calls all in doubt," 1611. Genuine distress, in a literate minority. Donne wrote a poem.
  • Common descent, 1859. Still absorbing. In 2024, 37% of Americans held a young-earth position.
  • The universe dwarfs the galaxy, 1924. New York Times, 23 November — "without attracting much attention."
  • LGM-1. A pulsar.
  • Possible fossil life from Mars. Announced from a presidential podium. No measurable after.
  • 6,354 confirmed exoplanets. A number that goes up.
  • A second biosphere, under our feet. Nothing.

The pattern does not vary. Not once, in five centuries, across revelations larger, better confirmed, and more directly threatening to the human self-image than anything Disclosure could plausibly deliver.

But it would change everything is not an argument. It is a feeling about the future offered in place of a look at the past, and the past is right there, extensively documented, saying no.

One honest caveat before the door closes. Nobody has demonstrated that prior exposure inoculates a culture against the shock; that remains my hypothesis rather than a finding, and the survey work we have measures anticipated reaction, which is not the same thing as reaction. What has been demonstrated is narrower, and sufficient: confirmed revelation, repeatedly, at scale, over centuries, produces absorption rather than crisis.

We are not waiting to learn how we would react. We have known since Montaigne was handed the reorganization of the heavens and decided we "ought not much to care which is the true opinion."
